Veteran media executive Anu Sikka has joined Jio Studios as Head of Animation, sources close to the development have confirmed to exchange4media.
The appointment marks Sikka’s next professional move after she recently stepped down from her position as Executive Vice President and Business Head – Kids Entertainment and Infotainment at JioStar. She concluded an association of more than two decades with Viacom18, which became part of JioStar following the merger of the media businesses of Reliance Industries and The Walt Disney Company in India.
In her new role, Sikka will bring her extensive experience in animation, children’s entertainment, content development and intellectual property creation to Jio Studios. Further details about her mandate are yet to be officially announced.
Sikka joined Viacom18 in 2006 and played an instrumental role in building and expanding the network’s children’s entertainment portfolio. During her tenure, she helped strengthen the market for home-grown animation and character-led entertainment in India.
She was closely involved in the creation and development of several popular Indian animation properties, including Motu Patlu, Shiva, Gattu Battu, Rudra, Keymon Ache and Pakdam Pakdai. Under her leadership, the kids entertainment cluster produced more than 650 hours of locally developed original content.
Sikka also oversaw the acquisition and localisation of major international children’s properties such as Ninja Hattori, Oggy and the Cockroaches and Doraemon. She was involved in bringing Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards to India and developing it into an annual property for the network.
Across her long tenure, she handled a wide range of responsibilities encompassing content strategy, programming, scheduling, commissioning, acquisitions, budgeting, marketing and consumer products.
Before joining Viacom18, Sikka began her career in current affairs programming with Newstrack, the predecessor of Aaj Tak. She subsequently worked with BITV and Tara Punjabi and later headed SAB TV’s Delhi bureau, where she worked on current affairs programming. She also served as Creative Director at Hungama Kids Channel before moving to Viacom18.
