As celebrated TV news anchor Navika Kumar marks another birthday, it's time to look at the milestones in a career that has consistently shaped political journalism on Indian television.
Born on 21 August in Kolkata, West Bengal, Kumar pursued her education in economics, completing a master’s degree before stepping into the newsroom. Instead of following the conventional path of a career in finance, she chose journalism, beginning as a business writer with The Economic Times. Her early career also included stints with The Observer and The Indian Express, where she reported on politics and governance.
Kumar’s most defining professional chapter began in 2005, when she joined Times Network. Over the years, she rose through the ranks and today serves as the Group Editor In Chief - Times Now & Times Now Navbharat. She is one of the few journalists to simultaneously lead in both English and Hindi television news.
As an anchor, Kumar fronts the primetime debate show The Newshour on Times Now and the Hindi programme Sawaal Public Ka on Times Now Navbharat. Known for her sharp questioning style, she has helmed discussions on issues ranging from governance and elections to scams and policy decisions. Her investigative reporting has spanned some of India’s most high-profile political and financial controversies, including the Commonwealth Games scam, the Augusta-Westland helicopter deal and the Aircel-Maxis case.
Beyond the newsroom, Kumar has spoken about the balance between her demanding professional responsibilities and her personal life. Married to businessman Sunil Marwah, she is a mother of two sons. In past interviews, she has reflected on how family support has enabled her to remain deeply invested in her work while staying connected to her roots.
On her birthday, Kumar stands as one of the most prominent figures in Indian broadcast journalism. Her journey from Kolkata to the national stage underscores not only her persistence but also the growing role of women in shaping political news narratives in the country.
