Reporter’s Diary: My current status is ‘In Media’
Reporter Surbhi Bhasin’s transition from student to professional has been at a breathless pace. She shares some of her learnings and observations
While going through my Facebook account yesterday, I came across a ‘status’ photo put up by one of my friends. It brought a smile to my face and also set me thinking – my life isn’t any different. The photo had five options given with a box alongside to tick to explain one’s current status. The options were – Single, Married, It’s complicated, In a relationship and In Media! The last one was tick marked.
I am three months old in this media industry, but it seems like three years. The moment I stepped into this field, it’s been like being in a whirlwind. Every day, every minute brings so many learnings. The transition from student to professional has been at a breathless pace. And today, I would consider my status to be that of ‘In Media’.
When I had just started out in the media industry, I had talked about media being a bridge over which brand messages travel to reach the consumers. The bridge analogy can be extended to be a bridge of interaction between people and brands.
Media has opened the doors to me to meet experts in diverse fields. People who have set up business organisations and have been leading them with much success. Every conversation that I’ve had with the industry honchos have left me so much enriched and what never ceases to amaze me is their passion, energy, dedication and knowledge.
Media has become a way of life for me. The various industry events that I have been attending have opened my mind to various aspects of a single topic. Surfing various news portals have taken precedence over so many things that I used to indulge in earlier. Media apps on my phone keep me updated on latest developments.
Sites such as Twitter and Facebook can be addictive, and it’s easy to waste hours checking people’s updates and following up interesting, but not entirely relevant links. I try to get around this by checking up on what the industry honchos are saying on social media, what they are trending or tweeting about.
And I am getting used to the fact that media is a 24x7 profession. One never really logs off. And you thought all those spotlights and flashing cameras were glamourous?
