Goodbye 2009; Hello and a happy New Year! – Pradyuman Maheshwari

It’s the start of New Year and a new decade. The mood’s tentative and there’s make-believe optimism. But, the only way we can drive away the gloom is by staying upbeat and work horribly hard, writes Pradyuman Maheshwari.

Goodbye 2009; Hello and a happy New Year! – Pradyuman Maheshwari

Greetings! It’s 2010. Two Thousand Ten. Oh, yes, please get it right on your cheques else they’ll be turned back. Happy New Year! May you have a prosperous and fulfilling year ahead.

O-Nine started on a cheerful note, but all that was feigned. We knew what was coming, but we hoped it didn’t. We were tentative about the elections, about IPL and about films doing well. Mercifully, all of them happened peacefully. We have the same Prime Minister, and the United States economy is showing early signs of recovery. Though it’s still bad days.

Will spends on advertising increase? Will media companies reinvest in their own growth? The healthy performance of the Dainik Bhaskar IPO last month was an encouraging sign. The mood’s tentative and there’s make-believe optimism. A lot of people in the media sector have lost jobs. Some have even suffered pay cuts, but the only way to reduce that pain is to look at the happier side: it’s just a cut stupid, the job’s intact.

Will things improve in the months to come? The price of the food we eat is high. Tur or Arhar dal or whatever you call split pigeon pea is priced above Rs 100. Veggies and meat aren’t cheap either. Real estate prices are said to have gone down, but not if you are a buyer. These are issues, which may not directly concern the media, but they do impact the country. And our lives.

At the exchange4media Group, we strive hard to bring you the best all-round coverage on media, advertising and marketing. In 2010, we resolve to bring you the same. And more. We complete 10 years of existence this year, and we resolve to bring you better offerings over the next decade too. And thereafter.

We know that many of you are shut today. Though news journalists are working and there are many accessing their mails at home or on their cellphones.

The team is around to bring you your morning newsletter and updates. Working on January 1 is a good way to start the year. So rest assured, we’ll be there to bring you all the khabar from the world of media. Once again: Happy New Year. Wish you a super 2010.
