From Bandra to the Assembly: Ashish Shelar marks his 53rd birthday

Today, Ashish Babaji Shelar, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and respected sports administrator, celebrates his 53rd birthday. Born on October 3, 1972, in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, Shelar’s journey from a modest background to a key figure in Mumbai’s political and sporting life reflects determination, discipline and leadership.

Shelar grew up in Bandra, where he completed his schooling. His formative years were marked by participation in social and cultural activities, which laid the foundation for his involvement in public life. 

Shelar formally entered politics through the BJP’s youth wing, quickly building a reputation as an articulate leader and effective organizer. He was first elected as a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 2012, a role he held until 2014. That same year, he successfully contested the Bandra West Assembly constituency, defeating seasoned opponent Baba Siddique, and has since retained the seat as a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly (MLA).

Within the BJP, Shelar has held several important organizational roles. Most notably, he served as President of BJP Mumbai from August 2022 to August 2025, shaping the party’s urban outreach and consolidating its presence in the country’s financial capital. His tenure in the party and assembly has been marked by focus on infrastructure, education, and civic issues affecting Mumbai.

Parallel to his political career, Shelar has made a mark in the sporting world. In June 2015, he was elected Vice President of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), one of the country’s most influential sporting bodies. His involvement extended further into football, where he has served as President of the Mumbai District Football Association, encouraging grassroots sports and youth participation. His stewardship in these roles reflects his belief in the power of sports to shape communities and foster discipline among youth.
