In a significant move ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a major hike in the monthly pension for journalists under the Bihar Patrakar Samman Pension Yojana. Eligible retired journalists will now receive ₹15,000 per month, up from the existing ₹6,000.

Sharing the update on social media, the CM stated, “I am happy to inform that eligible journalists will now get ₹15,000 monthly pension. The department has been directed accordingly.”

In a compassionate extension of the scheme, pensions for the spouses of deceased journalists have also been increased—from ₹3,000 to ₹10,000.

Kumar said the government is committed to safeguarding the independence and dignity of the press. He referred to journalists as “pillars of democracy” and stressed the importance of ensuring a dignified post-retirement life for them.

The move is being seen as both a welfare gesture and a timely political signal to the journalist community ahead of the polls.
