Rethinking how India shops and spends on holidays

  • Independence Day has historically marked the beginning of India's festive buying season, with retailers and e-commerce platforms offering significant discounts and promotions to attract consumers.
  • Recent trends indicate a shift in consumer behavior towards prioritizing experiences over traditional product purchases, with an increase in spending on travel and activities rather than just goods.
  • Data shows that while retail shopping remains strong, with a notable growth in organized retail and e-commerce sales during Independence Day, consumers are increasingly seeking experiences that complement their purchases.
  • Marketers are encouraged to adapt their strategies to reflect this change, focusing on the experiential aspects of products and creating omni-channel touchpoints that cater to the modern consumer's journey.

For years, Independence Day has served as an important gateway to India’s festive buying cycle – the first major consumption window before the larger festive season kicked in. It was a time when retailers, e-commerce platforms and brands would compete with each other for consumer attention with discounts, new launches and limited-period offers. Consumers would also time significant purchases around this window to make the most value out of the multiple offers. Independence Day sales gave consumers a sense of anticipation – almost a ritualistic one, to make purchases from electronics to appliances, and fashion to automobiles, on a memorable occasion and get the best value out of it. For some, the occasion gave an early opportunity to make a purchase which they would have otherwise postponed until better circumstances.

Hence, for retailers and e-commerce players, this was not merely as promotional occasion, but an early indicator of spending appetite that would shape the actual festive months ahead. But now, beneath the familiar sales narrative, there has been a quiet shift that is taking place, especially in the past few years or so.

The Indian Consumer is now as increasingly moving towards purchasing experiences, and product purchases are now an integral part of a larger experience – not an isolated purchase in itself!

What this means is that instead of splurging on a new wardrobe, the modern consumer will choose a three-day trip – and buy a wardrobe for the trip! Additionally, plan purchases around eating out and experiencing local culture etc. The consumer is not spending less. They are, in fact, becoming increasingly expansive about what constitutes a wholesome experience worth spending on!

Some key trends shaping this shift include:

  • Consumers are buying moments, not just things: The emergence of ‘micro-cations’ captures this shift really well. According to reports, domestic searches for monsoon trips to Goa rose nearly 40% year-on-year, while travellers increasingly opted for spontaneous weekend getaways and shorter three-to-five-day holidays. Independence Day itself has emerged as a travel occasion with strong search and booking intention around clubbing weekends and public holidays for a short vacation.
The McKinsey’s 2026 consumer research further reinforces the trend that consumers are increasingly prioritising experiences that make them feel connected, relaxed or excited. Travel experiences, including tourism, flights and lodging, reported grew 4.4% between 2023 and 2025, also revealing that a whooping 27% consumers admitting that they would spend additional cash on vacations, making it a strong individual category for discretionary splurging.
  • The product is no longer the whole purchase: The shift towards experiences has not impacted retail shopping. In fact, the 2025 Independence Day sale demonstrated considerable spending appetite across both physical and digital retail. According to CBRE India Retail Market Outlook 2026, India’s organised retail has recorded a robust 14% Y-o-Y growth in 2025, Electronics, groceries and apparels saw strong demand. Malls also benefitted from higher footfalls, witnessing a boost to experience economy, with dinning, games, entertainment also getting popular, along with shopping.

Amazon’s Great Indian Freedom Festival and Flipkart’s Freedom sale also demonstrated a high momentum, further confirming that Independence Day continued to be a powerful digital shopping event as well. As per 2026 data from Unicommerce e-commerce volume grew by 31% Y-o-Y, during 2026 Independence Day sale period while GMV increased by 30% , compared to the same period in 2025. While fashion remained the largest category by volume, FMCG clocked the fastest growing category clocking 100% Y-O-Y growth. Interestingly, healthy food products also emerged as a fast-growing sub category.  The story is no longer about experience Vs Product. It is about experiences expanding the definition and reach of consumption.
  • From discovery to dinning – consumer journey gets experiential: The rise of physical retail justifies the rising need for experiences to be a part of a purchase, making consumer journeys more fluid and wholesome. According to data from BCG, consumers seeking both physical connection and digital convenience. Nearly three quarters of holiday shoppers bought gifts in-store in 2024, even when they had researched or ordered online. Mall visits also increased across formats.
The new consumer journey can therefore look very different from what it was just a few years ago. Today, it is about discover online or offline, compare on an app, shop at a mall, travel for a weekend getaway, dine out, order something for home, and perhaps book the next getaway – all within the same consumption cycle!

What does this mean for Marketers?

For starters, a wider role! First, marketers today need to emerge out of the narrowly defined occasion-based marketing strategy and stop looking at an occasion or a holiday as a mere retail sale window. One needs to consider it as also a travel moment, a dinning occasion, a family bonding experience, a gifting opportunity and an opportunity to splurge on personal indulgences on memorable occasions.

Second, one needs to market the outcome, and not merely the product. The modern consumer responds well to what a product enables them to experience – comfort, discovery, nostalgia, connection, excitement or even self-indulgence.

Third, the touch points need to be omni channel and we are not talking retail vs digital. It needs to follow the consumer touchpoint journey, including digital discovery, physical retail experience, quick commerce convenience, travel platform indulgences, and narratives that are a part of social media trends – all of which are simultaneously a part of an average consumers product experience cycle.

Finally, marketers today need to understand that the consumer is no longer choosing between buying and experiencing – he is buying an experience! They are simply redefining what is worth spending on, where and how. The brands that understand this broader, fast-changing canvas will be better placed to capture not just the festive sale but also the consumer mindset, all round the year!
