What happens when two of the most effective communicators come together to author a book? The result is ‘Speechless’ - a book which brings in depth interviews of the country’s foremost public speakers thus serving as a guide both amateurs and professionals who want to hone their power of public speaking. The authors, Roshan Abbas and Siddharth Banerjee, EVP – Marketing, Vodafone Idea Limited have distilled 50 years of their experience in effective communication into a simple mantra that you can imbibe and follow, replete with examples, stories, tips and tricks, expert interviews and practice exercises.

Banerjee reveals that the duo hail from the same city and school. What’s more to this was a common passion that did thread it all together. “Both of us are in a habit of breathing public speaking and have been passionate about effective communication. In the corporate world too, there is a genuine need to communicate ideas effectively. You’re literally communicating ideas just every time. So our deep interest in the topic was the common point,” he says.

Abbas asserts that penning his experiences on public speaking was a long-time dream and a legacy that he wanted to leave. He feels that Indians are great with ideas but sometimes fail when it comes to pitching the same. “Therefore I thought it was opportune to have a do-it-yourself book that would work as a primer for anyone who was looking to sell an idea or close a deal or cement a relationship,” he says.

Banerjee reveals that the starting point of this was actually a workshop that took place two years ago at a conference called Speechless which garnered a lot of acclaim. “So basically it was about turning the principles of the workshop into a book,” he opens up.

“We believe people today are focused on reading and writing but the rhetoric has got lost,” Banerjee continues. He shares that the meaning of Speechless to him operates at two levels. “So that when you’re talking to someone, you aren’t speechless. And also the ability to leave your audience speechless,” contends Banerjee.

Abbas opens up that from the idea to the execution, the challenges were umpteen which ranged from discovering the skeleton of the steps needed to make a great presentation to the skills of public speaking which are more magical. “We also needed to capture the anecdotes which work as great examples of the implementation of our formula. Finally interviewing some of the great speakers in India was a tough task as they all run a busy schedule. We also wanted a book that was designed uniquely and I found Rahul Jha on Instagram who is a great artist and totally got our brief,” he lets out. 

Banerjee says that whole journey of authoring the book has been very exciting. “We learnt a lot from each other and in the process understood what inspired each other and shared anecdotes too for the book. I’m happy with the fact that it’s an Amazon best seller and our vision now is to help people communicate effectively,” he concludes. The duo hopes that the book is a go-to resource for everyone from a CXO, management and sales professional to a college student.
