Rohit Jawa, the man who spent close to four decades shaping and reshaping Hindustan Unilever and Unilever across continents, turns a year older today. At exchange4media, we have tracked his career over the years, but today calls for more than reporting, it calls for celebration.

For here is a story of ambition, resilience and transformation, one that began with a young management trainee walking into Hindustan Lever’s offices in 1988 and ended with him stepping down as MD & CEO of Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) in July 2025.

When he joined the company, Jawa was fresh out of St. Stephen’s College and the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi. He brought with him the mix of ambition and humility that would stay with him through the decades. In his early years in sales and marketing, he developed an instinct for navigating India’s complex markets and understanding consumer behaviour. That grounding gave him the confidence to look beyond borders and embrace challenges far away from home.

His career soon became a story of movement. He took on roles across Southeast Asia and North Asia, never settling into the comfort zone of the familiar. Each assignment stretched him differently, shaping him into a leader with both global perspective and local sensitivity. The most defining chapter of this global journey came in China, when he was appointed Executive Vice President, North Asia, and Chairman of Unilever China.

China was, at the time, a daunting market for many multinational companies — vast, fast-changing and fraught with complexity. Under Jawa’s leadership, Unilever’s business there wasn’t just managed; it was transformed. He pushed through a strategy of modernisation, digitalisation and premiumisation, bringing a new structure to operations and ensuring consistent growth. By the time he moved on, China had become Unilever’s third-largest market globally. This achievement reflected not only his operational skills but also his foresight in positioning the company for long-term success in a highly competitive environment.

Then came Covid-19. The pandemic shook businesses across the world, and China was its early epicentre. For many, the crisis was overwhelming. For Jawa, it was a test of leadership. He steered Unilever China with a steady hand, moving swiftly from crisis management to forward-looking strategy. He balanced caution with boldness, ensuring the company did not just survive the storm but emerged stronger. It was here that his reputation as a leader who was steady without being static, bold without being reckless, was cemented.

In June 2023, Jawa’s journey came full circle. He returned to India to take charge as MD & CEO of Hindustan Unilever. For many, it felt like destiny,  the management trainee of 1988 was back at the company’s helm. But this was not a sentimental homecoming. Jawa came with a clear agenda: to accelerate HUL’s digital transformation, to drive acquisitions and to deepen premiumisation across categories. He placed emphasis on direct-to-consumer models and sharpened the company’s focus on the beauty and wellbeing space, aligning with global trends while keeping Indian consumers at the heart of strategy. His tenure may have been brief, but it was impactful, ensuring HUL was positioned firmly for its next phase of growth.

On July 31, 2025, Rohit Jawa stepped down, handing the reins to Priya Nair, another seasoned Unilever leader. The transition was smooth, marked by the continuity that has long been a hallmark of Unilever’s leadership culture. In his parting reflections, Jawa described his career as fulfilling and looked forward to exploring new horizons.

What makes his story special is not just the scale of achievements but the way they were achieved. For 37 years, he showed that longevity in one organisation does not mean stagnation. He reinvented himself repeatedly, adapting to new markets, new consumer trends, and new disruptions. He nurtured people, built leaders, and left every role stronger than he found it.

As Rohit Jawa celebrates his birthday this year, it is worth remembering that his career is not just about the positions he held but about the transformations he enabled. He showed that leadership is not about titles, but about vision, patience, and adaptability.
