Unilever chief Fernando Fernandez has called on Hindustan Unilever (HUL) to speed up its move into more profitable product segments and strengthen its footing across emerging retail and digital channels, according to media reports.

Fernandez reportedly said this during a town hall meeting with HUL employees on his India visit.

He is said to have emphasised that relying on volume growth by itself will no longer support progress in an intensely competitive landscape. He pressed the company to pursue more disciplined growth, deepen investments in new channels, and focus on profitability rather than expansion driven purely by scale.

According to reports, Fernandez was accompanied by Unilever's global team including its global supply chain head Willem Uijen.

He met teams and distributors across metros and smaller markets, emphasising the need to strengthen HUL’s vast rural network—long a competitive advantage—even as newer channels like quick commerce narrow the gap for emerging direct-to-consumer brands.
