YouTube has rolled out Premium Lite in India, a lower-cost subscription priced at ₹89 per month that allows users to watch most videos without ads. The plan, which is being introduced in phases across the country, is aimed at viewers who primarily want ad-free content without paying for the full suite of Premium features.
In an official blog post, the company said, “Today we'll begin expanding our Premium Lite pilot to users in India. Premium Lite gives viewers a new, more affordable way to enjoy most videos on YouTube ad-free for ₹89 per month.”
The membership works across phones, laptops and TVs, but comes with limitations. While ads will be removed from most long-form videos, they will still appear on YouTube Shorts, music content, and during search or browsing. Unlike the standard Premium plan, Lite does not include offline downloads, background play or ad-free music via YouTube Music.
“YouTube Music and Premium, and the expansion of Premium Lite, also continue to create additional revenue opportunities for our creators and partners,” the platform added.
The launch reflects YouTube’s efforts to expand subscription revenue in India, one of its largest markets, while giving price-sensitive users more flexible options. Globally, YouTube Music and Premium together have surpassed 125 million subscribers, including trial users.
Industry observers note that Premium Lite could help YouTube capture a wider base of paying subscribers, while advertisers may need to adjust as more users shift to ad-free plans.
The rollout has begun and the new tier is expected to be available nationwide in the coming weeks.
