India has announced a major step in advancing its artificial intelligence ecosystem with the deployment of 38,000 GPUs at affordable rates and the establishment of 600 data labs across the country. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) through the IndiaAI Mission, is aimed at accelerating AI research, innovation, and industry adoption.
The move is designed to ensure that cutting-edge computing infrastructure is accessible to innovators, researchers, and enterprises, while embedding ethical and responsible AI practices. Alongside building technical capacity, the focus is also on combating misinformation, fostering trust, and embedding AI culture across organisations.
The strategy highlights how India is positioning itself to address real-world challenges with AI-driven solutions, ranging from agriculture and healthcare to finance and inclusion. Affordable access to GPUs, available for as low as Rs 65 per hour, combined with strong academic talent and world-class data resources, is enabling the ecosystem to flourish.
By aligning infrastructure expansion with responsible governance, MeitY is laying the foundation for India to emerge as a global leader in AI adoption and application, ensuring innovation is both inclusive and impactful.
