Anthropic, the Amazon-backed artificial intelligence company valued at $183 billion, is entering India with plans to open its first office in Bengaluru by early 2026. This will be its second office in Asia after Tokyo, signalling the company’s deepening global ambitions amid rising AI adoption worldwide.
CEO Dario Amodei, currently visiting India to meet policymakers and enterprise leaders, said India’s vast technical talent pool and government-led AI initiatives make it a natural fit for expansion. “There is deep alignment between the challenges India is tackling and our mission as a company from deploying AI across diverse languages to building frameworks for responsible governance,” Amodei noted.
Anthropic plans to focus on “AI for social impact”, targeting key sectors like education, healthcare, and agriculture, while also partnering with Indian enterprises and startups. The Bengaluru hub will anchor efforts to support the country’s growing AI and developer ecosystem.
India already ranks second globally in Claude usage, Anthropic’s flagship AI model. The company is also enhancing Claude’s Indic language capabilities, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, and Marathi, to enable broader accessibility across the subcontinent.
As OpenAI ramps up its own India presence, Anthropic’s local expansion underscores intensifying competition among global AI leaders. With India emerging as one of the fastest-growing AI markets, Anthropic’s move signals its intent to play a long-term role in shaping the country’s digital transformation.
