The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has been allocated Rs 21,632 crore in the Union Budget 2026–27, marking a recovery from the sharply reduced revised estimates of the previous year, but remaining well below the original allocation for 2025–26.
As per the Budget documents, MeitY’s allocation for 2026–27 is higher than the Revised Estimates of Rs 20,232.95 crore for 2025–26, but lower than the Budget Estimates of Rs 26,026.25 crore announced last year. This translates into a year-on-year increase of 6.9 percent over the revised spending for FY26, even as the ministry’s allocation is down 16.9 percent compared to the FY26 Budget Estimates.
Of the total Rs 21,632 crore allocation for 2026–27, revenue expenditure accounts for Rs 21,234.15 crore, while capital expenditure stands at Rs 398.81 crore, underscoring the government’s continued emphasis on programme-led spending rather than asset-heavy investments.
The Digital India Programme has been allocated Rs 4,741.51 crore in 2026–27, reflecting sustained investment in digital public infrastructure, platforms, cybersecurity, capacity building, and research and development in electronics and information technology.
Spending on semiconductors and display manufacturing continues to be a key priority. The Modified Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing has been allocated Rs 5,000 crore for 2026–27. This includes support for semiconductor fabrication units, display fabs, compound semiconductors, semiconductor laboratories and design-linked incentive initiatives.
The IndiaAI Mission has been allocated Rs 1,000 crore in the Budget for 2026–27 (which was Rs 2000 cr BE and Rs 800 cr RE in 2025-26), highlighting the government’s intent to build domestic artificial intelligence capabilities, including AI infrastructure, compute capacity and innovation-driven applications.
