Today, the advertising fraternity comes together to wish Swapan Seth, Founder of Ackerman, a very happy birthday. Few careers in Indian advertising read quite like his: a story that began with a leap of faith at 19 and has since grown into a body of work spanning copywriting, brand strategy, authorship, art collecting and mentorship.
Seth's journey started at JWT, Calcutta, where he walked in at the age of 19 after dropping out of college. Within a year, he was transferred to the agency's Hong Kong office, an early sign of the rapid trajectory that would follow. By 22, he had already won his first Cannes Lion. A Clio followed at 23. At 24, he became the youngest ever Creative Director at Clarion, a milestone that remains part of advertising folklore even today. By 26, he had risen to Vice President at Trikaya Grey, cementing his reputation as one of the sharpest creative minds of his generation.
At 28, Seth took the plunge into entrepreneurship, founding his own agency, Equus. Under his leadership, the agency went on to work with some of India's most recognisable brands, including Max New York Life, Barista, Kingfisher Airlines, Harvest Gold Bread and Matrix. The agency later evolved into Equus Red Cell, where Seth served as CEO and subsequently Chairman. Over the years, the agency's client roster expanded to include names such as Reliance Capital, Deutsche Bank, Taj Hotels, Coca-Cola, Hindustan Times and Sleepwell.
Seth's most recent chapter has been building Ackerman, an agency that describes its own mandate as creating communication across both online and offline spaces, curating content for brands and pioneering what it calls "thinkfluencer" marketing. It is a fitting evolution for someone who has spent his career reading where culture and commerce intersect, and translating that instinct into work that brands can build on.
Beyond the boardroom, Seth has built an equally distinctive identity as a writer and thinker. He is the author of the bestselling book ‘This Is All I Have to Say’ and has written extensively for publications including The Economic Times, Hindustan Times, Harper's Bazaar, and India Today.
As a speaker and mentor, Seth has become a sought-after voice at industry platforms, sharing his journey from college dropout to agency founder as proof that talent, curiosity and hard work can carve out an extraordinary career. Younger professionals in the industry often cite him as an influence, drawn to his willingness to talk as openly about failure as he does about success.
As he celebrates his birthday today, the advertising and media community joins in wishing Swapan Seth continued good health, creative energy, and many more milestones ahead. From a teenage copywriter in Calcutta to one of Indian advertising's most recognisable names, his story remains a reminder that a career built on curiosity, storytelling and reinvention never really stops evolving.
