Amazon releases Alexa+, revamps AI assistant

Amazon has unveiled Alexa+, its next-generation AI-powered voice assistant, marking a significant leap in conversational AI technology. Announced at Amazon's February 2025 Devices & Services event, Alexa+ represents a complete redesign of the popular digital assistant.

Alexa+ is built on a new architecture that integrates multiple AI models, including Amazon's own Nova models and those from partner Anthropic. The system operates on a model-agnostic framework, selecting the most suitable model for each task. This advanced architecture enables Alexa+ to offer improved conversational abilities, personalisation, and task completion capabilities.

Key features of Alexa+ include natural language processing that feels more human-like, contextual understanding for seamless interactions, and the ability to learn from conversations to deliver personalized answers and solutions. The assistant can now handle complex tasks such as making restaurant reservations, ordering groceries, and controlling smart home devices with minimal user supervision.

Alexa+ will be available in the coming weeks in the US, with Prime members getting free access or others paying $19.99 monthly.

While the India-specific launch details for Alexa+ are yet to be announced, Amazon's presence in the Indian market remains strong. Amazon Seller Services, which operates the marketplace business in India, reported a 14.4% jump in revenue to Rs 25,406 crore for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024. The company also narrowed its net loss by 28.5% to Rs 3,469.50 crore in FY24.

As Amazon continues to innovate in AI and voice technology globally, it's likely that Indian consumers will soon benefit from these advancements. The introduction of Alexa+ could potentially revitalize Amazon's consumer electronics division in India, leveraging the existing base of Alexa-enabled devices in the country.
