Gaurav Gandhi turned a year older on January 10, 2025 and we decided to reflect on the remarkable journey of a leader who has become synonymous with innovation and success in the media and entertainment industry.

From his early career in advertising and broadcasting to his transformative role at Amazon Prime Video, Gandhi’s story is one of relentless pursuit of excellence, a visionary approach to challenges, and a commitment to connecting audiences through powerful storytelling.

Currently serving as the Vice President of Amazon Prime Video for Asia-Pacific and Middle East-North Africa (MENA), Gandhi oversees the platform’s business strategy across multiple regions, including India, Japan, Indonesia, the UAE, and several other emerging markets. Under his leadership, Prime Video has become a dominant player in the streaming world, offering services like Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD), Transactional Video on Demand (TVOD) through the Prime Video Store, and Prime Video Channels.

Joining Amazon in 2018 as the Country Head for Prime Video India, Gandhi quickly established himself as a game-changer. He introduced industry-first initiatives such as Prime Video Mobile Edition, tailored for India’s mobile-first audience, and Prime Lite, catering to value-conscious users. He also pioneered direct-to-service global premieres of Indian movies in multiple languages, co-productions, and the creation of original films. These efforts positioned Prime Video as a leader not just in India but across global markets.

One of Gandhi’s standout achievements is the global success of Indian Amazon Originals. Under his guidance, shows and films from India have reached audiences in 170 countries, with one out of every five viewers hailing from outside India. Titles in regional languages are viewed in over 4,000 cities and towns across India, making Prime Video a truly inclusive platform that connects local and global audiences.

Beyond India, Gandhi has spearheaded Prime Video’s expansion into high-growth markets like Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia. His ability to adapt to local preferences while maintaining a unified brand vision has set a benchmark for international streaming platforms.

Gandhi’s journey to becoming one of the most influential figures in global streaming is built on a 25-year career spanning consumer tech, advertising, and media. Before joining Amazon, he held leadership roles at some of India’s most prominent media companies, including Viacom18, NDTV Imagine, STAR India, and Turner International.

In 2015, he transitioned into the video streaming space by launching and managing Viacom18’s streaming service, VOOT, a pivotal step that positioned him as a trailblazer in digital media. His academic background—a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Delhi University and an MBA in Advertising and Communication Management from NMIMS Mumbai—laid a strong foundation for his success.

Gandhi’s ability to blend creative ambition with business acumen has been a hallmark of his career. He emphasizes the importance of content that is “meaningful enough to be commercially viable,” a perspective that has shaped Prime Video’s approach to programming. By focusing on both storytelling and strategy, he has ensured that the platform remains relevant, engaging, and profitable.

His vision is complemented by his keen understanding of emerging trends and audience behavior. Gandhi’s introduction of live sports on Prime Video, a video entertainment marketplace through Prime Video Channels and a movie rental service demonstrates his forward-thinking approach to creating a holistic entertainment experience.

Gandhi’s humility and curiosity remain central to his personality. Whether he’s championing regional content or strategizing for the next big market, he approaches every challenge with an openness to learning and innovation.

Gandhi’s influence in the industry has not gone unnoticed. He was nominated for the e4m Influencer of the Year 2023, an award that honors visionaries who have transformed the marketing and advertising landscape. This recognition is a testament to his impact not just on Prime Video but on the broader media and entertainment ecosystem.

As the streaming industry continues to evolve, Gandhi’s leadership offers a blueprint for success. His ability to balance global aspirations with local sensitivities, combine creativity with commerce, and embrace innovation while staying grounded has made him a role model for media professionals worldwide.
