The Maharashtra Maritime Board plans to install advertising hoardings and floating ad barges at around 20 waterfront locations across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Juhu Beach and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link jetty.
As per reports, this is an attempt to generate revenue for port and water transport infrastructure.
However, the proposal has come under scrutiny over environmental clearances and visual pollution.
The board has floated tenders to appoint advertising agencies on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Maintain (DBFOM) basis for billboard installations.
Some other proposed sites include Carter Road and Marve Jetty.
The plan has sparked concerns over the commercial use of Mumbai’s waterfront, with questions around regulatory compliance, environmental impact and visual pollution potentially complicating its implementation.
