A long-running rift between the Maran brothers – Kalanithi Maran, Chairman of Sun TV Network, and his younger brother Dayanidhi Maran, DMK MP and former Union Minister – appears to be easing. According to reports, a truce may have been reached following the intervention of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who is also a cousin of the Marans.
For those unfamiliar, the Maran brothers are nephews of the late DMK patriarch and former Tamil Nadu CM M Karunanidhi. Sources told Moneycontrol that a private meeting was held between the brothers and CM Stalin, with Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin and their sister Anbukarasi also in attendance.
While the terms of the settlement remain unclear — be it a financial deal or a split of business assets — the development signals a potential turning point in what has been a deeply personal and high-stakes dispute.
The apparent reconciliation between the Maran brothers comes in the wake of a legal notice sent by Dayanidhi Maran in June, accusing his elder brother Kalanithi Maran of financial irregularities. The allegations ranged from mismanagement and fraudulent activity to potential money laundering, all reportedly tied to the control and shareholding of Sun TV after the passing of their father, Murasoli Maran, in 2003. Dayanidhi had asserted that their father died without a will and called for the company’s ownership structure to revert to what it was at that time.
The dispute quickly drew public and market attention, with Dayanidhi warning of possible scrutiny from regulatory bodies like the SEBI, RBI, ED, SFIO and the Registrar of Companies. The impact was immediate — Sun TV’s stock dropped over 5 percent in early trading after news of the feud surfaced.
