Siti Networks leads Cable TV sector with the largest subscriber base in July-Sept 19: TRAI
Other major MSOs for the most number of subscribers include GTPL Hathway, Hathway Digital and Den Networks. Tata Sky continues to reign DTH with 31.61% market share
TRAI has released the Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report for the quarter ending 30 September 2019. The report provides a broad perspective of the telecom services in India. Compiled based on the information furnished by the service providers, it also presents the key parameters and growth trends for the Cable TV, DTH & Radio Broadcasting services from 1 July 2019 to 30 September 2019.
The report states that the country achieved 100 per cent digitization of Cable TV network, making India the only large country where 100 per cent digital cable has been achieved through mandatory regulations. As of 30 September 2019, there are 1,606 Multi-System Operators (MSOs) registered with MIB. Out of these registered MSOs, 1,143 are operational. Further, as per the data reported by MSOs/HITS (Head in the Sky) operators, there are 12 MSOs & 1 HITS operator, who have a 1M+ subscriber base.
In the top 13 MSOs, Siti Networks has the largest total active subscriber base with 9.1 million, followed by GTPL Hathway with 5.34 million and Hathway Digital with 5.31 million. Den Network registered 4.30 million subscriber base.
In DTH sector, the report revealed that DTH (direct-to-home) service has displayed a phenomenal growth since its introduction. During the quarter ending 30 September 2019, there were four pay DTH service providers in the country. Pay DTH has attained total active subscriber base of around 69.30 million in QE 30 September 2019. This is in addition to the subscribers of DTH Free Dish (free DTH services of Doordarshan). Tata Sky leads the DTH industry with 31.61 per cent share while Dish TV holds 31.23. Airtel accounts for 23.39 per cent of the total share and Sun Direct holds 13.78 per cent.
The same report states that apart from the radio stations operated by All India Radio, as of 30 September 2019, there are 367 operational private FM Radio stations in 104 cities with operational 33 Private FM Radio broadcaster as compared to 366 private FM Radio Stations in 104 cities with operational 33 FM Radio broadcasters in the previous quarter.
The reported advertisement revenue during the quarter ending 30th September 2019 with respect to 366 private FM Radio stations is Rs.466.70 crore as against Rs.526.13 crore for 365 private FM Radio stations in the previous quarter.
In the TV segment, a total number of 910 private satellite TV channels have been permitted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) for uplinking only/downlinking only/uplinking and downlinking both. The total number of private TV channels as increased by 59 from 851 on 30 September 2018 to 910 on 30 September 2019.
As per the broadcasters reporting to TRAI in pursuance of the Tariff Order (Broadcasting & Cable), dated 3 March 2017, there are 330 pay channels as on 30 September 2019, which include 232 SD pay-TV channels and 98 HD Pay TV channels.
