Ahead of TRAI’s tariff regime, broadcasters announce new channel packs

All major broadcasters, including Star, Zee, Sony, Viacom18 and Discovery, have come up with bouquet of channel packs catering to different consumer needs

With just days to go before TRAI’s new tariff regulation comes into force on December 29, all major broadcasters have introduced their bouquet of channel packs. The new regulation will give consumers the choice to pay for only those TV channels that they want to watch.

A week ago, Star India and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) unveiled their new channel packs. Other broadcasters such as Sony Pictures Network India, Viacom18 and Discovery Communications India also announced their new packs over the weekend.

Star India has launched Star Value Pack starting from Rs 49. The Value Pack is available in seven languages-- Hindi, English, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. In the pack, viewers have been offered sports properties such as Vivo IPL, ICC Cricket World Cup, BCCI tournaments, Vivo Pro Kabaddi League and Hero Indian Super League. For Rs 49 per month, Star India is offering 12 SD channels-- Star Plus, Star Utsav, Star Bharat, Star Gold, Movies OK, Star Utsav Movies, Star Sports 1, Star Sports 2, Star Sports 3, Star Sports 1 Hindi, Nat GEO Wild and National Geographic. The network has announced four packs-- Value Pack SD, Value Pack HD, Premium Pack SD and Premium Pack HD.

ZEEL too has unveiled its bouquet of packs ahead of the December 29 deadline. The broadcaster has come up with family packs in 11 regional languages - Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Bengali, Odia, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and English.  

It will be offering three types of packs to cater to different viewer needs. While Prime Packs have been created for core regional language consumption, Family Packs will offer the top genres and All-in-One Packs will provide all genres. The ‘Zee Family Pack’ targeted at the Hindi Speaking Market (HSM) has been priced at Rs 45 per month for 24 channels.

On December 21, Sony Pictures Network India launched Happy India pack priced at Rs 31 per month for nine channels. Sony has introduced 16 bouquets starting from Rs 31 under Sony Silver pack which will have Sab, Set Max, Max 2, Sony Yay!, Pal, Sony Wah, Mix and Sony Marathi to Rs 90 under Sony HD Platinum Pack. The platinum pack offers 18 channels.

Similarly, Viacom18 has launched Colors Wala pack Sirf Rs 1 per day i.e at Rs 25 for 20 channels. Whereas, Discovery has launched the new SD pack at Rs 8 for nine channels and HD pack for Rs 10.
