Tata and Bharti Groups are in the final stages of closing the merger deal to combine the businesses of Tata Play and Airtel Digital TV, media networks have reported.
The merger is said to take place via a share swap with Airtel's share being more than 50%.
The service provider will also have access to Tata Play's 19 million homes, some reports said.
This comes amidst industry reports regarding the decline in the DTH business. India's pay DTH sector has witnessed a decline in its active subscriber base, dropping from 62.17 million in June 2024 to 59.91 million by September 2024, a report released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said recently.
“Pay DTH has attained a total active subscriber base of around 59.91 million. This is in addition to the subscribers of the DD Free Dish (free DTH services of Doordarshan). The total active subscriber base has decreased from 62.17 million in June, 2024 to 59.91 million in September 2024,” said the TRAI’s report.
