Ah, Valentine’s Day. A day of (or rather known for its) grand romantic gestures, heart-shaped every-freaking-thing, and… some truly unforgettable advertising! Over the years, brands have gone all out to capture this essence of love—some making us swoon, while some making us laugh and a few creating campaigns so iconic, that they practically have main character energy in the advertising hall of fame!
From Cadbury Dairy Milk Silk’s consistently heartwarming storytelling to Fevicol’s quirky genius that always sticks (pun intended), brands have turned February 14th into more than just a celebration of love—it’s become an annual showdown of creativity, wit and perhaps, at times even emotional resonance.
What is it about advertising that makes my heart skip a beat if you ask? It’s the ability to take a simple human truth and turn it into something unforgettable. The rush of crafting a campaign that makes people feel something—joy, nostalgia, surprise, maybe even a little heartbreak. It’s about storytelling at its finest—whether it’s a clever one-liner or a full-blown narrative that leaves us misty-eyed.
And let’s be honest, advertising is and has always been about people. The brainstorming, the idea clashes, the “OMG, that’s brilliant” moments and the sheer energy of creative collaboration. It’s chaos, but the ‘good kind’ of chaos. The kind that makes you want to do it all over again, every single day.
Now, when we speak about the beauty of advertising, speaking of legendary campaigns is definitely a must! So here are a few that made me fall head over heels (figuratively, of course—just wanted an excuse to use that phrase for their sheer brilliance.
- Cadbury 5 Star – The ‘Cousin’s Wedding’ Escape Plan
"Going to my cousin’s wedding"—the ultimate get-out-of-Valentine’s card! Cadbury 5 Star stayed true to their don’t care positioning with a hilariously bold take on Valentine’s Day pressure. But the real kicker? They bought an island just for the campaign. Yes, an actual island. The absurdity of it all made it so brilliantly memorable. Pura island kharid liya ek campaign ke liye! - Dairy Milk Silk – ‘How Far Will You Go to Make Them Blush?’
Some ads try too hard to be different, but this one proves that sometimes, simple works best. Dairy Milk Silk has mastered the art of capturing love in its purest, most innocent form—those little gestures that make someone smile (or in this case, blush). They understand the language of love better than a 2000s Bollywood rom-com, and their campaigns always hit the right notes. This year’s campaign? Loving it already! - Airbnb – ‘Spend a Night at Juliet’s House’
A Valentine’s Day getaway? Nice. But spending the night in Juliet’s house in Verona, Italy? Now that is peak romance! Airbnb’s campaign turned Shakespearean fantasy into reality, offering couples a once-in-a-lifetime chance to step inside a love story. It wasn’t just advertising a place to stay; it was selling an experience—and that’s what made it unforgettable. So Romeo-ntic! - Hotels.com – ‘Dumpster Vacation for Your Ex’
Some people celebrate love on Valentine’s Day. Others… well, let’s just say they’re less enthusiastic about it. Hotels.com took the anti-Valentine’s route with their 2021 campaign, letting people nominate an ex for a "dumpster vacation" in exchange for a ₹25,000 gift card. It was petty, hilarious, and the perfect way to connect with those who’d rather swipe left on love. Dark humor? Check. Brilliant execution? Double check. - McDonald’s – ‘I’m Lovin’ ____’
McDonald’s nailed personalisation with their 2018 Valentine’s Day campaign in Canada. They took their iconic I’m lovin’ it tagline and gave people the chance to make it their own—I’m lovin’ Monica, I’m lovin’ [insert name here]. It was simple, it was interactive, and it made customers feel part of the brand’s story. Sometimes, the best ideas are the ones staring right at us in the logo.
The beauty of advertising is in its endless possibilities. It lets brands connect with their audience in ways that go beyond products—it taps into emotions, humor, nostalgia and even rebellion. Whether it’s celebrating love, poking fun at it, or flipping the narrative entirely, brands have used Valentine’s Day as a canvas for some of their most creative storytelling.
And that’s what keeps me hooked. The power to shape narratives, surprise people, and make someone feel something. The ability to go hyper-local and global in the same breath. The sheer, insane, exhilarating joy of coming up with ideas that make people stop, think, smile, or even laugh out loud.
So here’s to the brands that keep raising the bar, the campaigns that make us fall in love with creativity and the magic of advertising that turns every day into Valentine’s Day.
Cheers! ?
