The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has launched a nationwide investor-awareness campaign, Project Jagrook, warning investors against relying on finfluencers, anonymous tips and exaggerated return claims, according to media reports.
Launched by Sebi Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey in Chandigarh on Monday, the campaign will run until March 2027 and focus on taking financial literacy to rural communities, universities and colleges.
Under the initiative, Sebi will work with stock exchanges, depositories, the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) and the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) to drive investor education in multiple languages.
Pandey urged investors to use regulated products, platforms and entities and invest only in instruments they understand. He also stressed diversification and cautioned investors against assuming that products offering fixed returns are necessarily risk-free.
As part of its campus outreach, Sebi will use its MUST (Mentoring of University and College Students through Trainers) programme to train teachers, staff and senior students as ‘Partner Trainers’ who will conduct financial-awareness sessions.
For rural India, the regulator will work with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj on financial literacy, awareness of regulated investment products and fraud prevention. It will also partner with state governments and local citizen-focused channels to expand its grassroots outreach.
Sebi will further introduce a National Securities Market Awareness Curriculum, along with a free Sebi Investor Awareness Test, to establish a common framework for investor education that can be adapted for different audiences.infl
