Rakesh Gopal, who celebrates his birthday today, has completed more than two decades in the Indian media industry, with his work spanning advertising, corporate affairs and revenue across some of the country’s leading media organisations.

Gopal began his career when India’s media sector was expanding rapidly, with satellite television gaining ground and traditional print players strengthening their positions. His early assignments involved sales and advertising, which laid the base for his expertise in revenue management.

At the India Today Group, Gopal worked on advertising partnerships and revenue strategies across its print and broadcast divisions. This role exposed him to the requirements of balancing business goals with the growth of a large news organisation.

He later moved to HT Media, where he focused on corporate functions tied to advertising and revenue. The period coincided with print players diversifying into digital and radio, providing him with experience in cross-platform revenue and multi-channel advertiser engagement.

Gopal also worked at Businessworld magazine in a leadership capacity, handling corporate affairs and revenue responsibilities. His role included aligning advertiser interest with the evolving positioning of the business publication.

Subsequently, he joined iTV Network, where he managed advertising sales and corporate strategy for the network’s television and print operations.

Gopal was Chief Revenue Officer at Bharat Express. He was part of the leadership team tasked with setting up the revenue framework for the channel, including building advertiser confidence, establishing partnerships, and creating a monetisation strategy from the ground up.

His experience covers both legacy institutions and newer ventures, giving him exposure to organisations at different stages of growth.
