Meta Platforms has announced that from December 16, 2025, conversations with its generative AI tools will be integrated into the company’s personalization systems to shape both content and advertising across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
The social media giant said notifications will roll out from October 7, alerting users to the change. However, there will be no option to opt out for those who choose to interact with Meta AI. The update will exclude users in the European Union, the UK, and South Korea, where regulatory frameworks require separate compliance.
Under the new system, voice and text chats with Meta AI will join existing signals such as likes, follows, and comments to refine recommendations. For example, a query about hiking could later lead to ads for trekking gear, suggestions for hiking groups, or friends’ updates about trail visits.
“People's interactions simply are going to be another piece of the input that will inform the personalization of feeds and ads,” said Christy Harris, Meta’s privacy policy manager, noting that the company is still developing initial features to leverage this data.
Meta explained that advertising will not be used to promote sensitive topics, such as politics, religion, sexual orientation, race, or health. Despite this, the change significantly expands how lifestyle interests and everyday queries will influence content across its platforms.
With Meta AI already crossing 1 billion monthly active users, the move reflects CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broader vision of making AI central to Meta’s ecosystem. Speaking at the company’s shareholder meeting earlier this year, Zuckerberg emphasized personalization, conversational AI, and entertainment as the year’s priorities.
The update comes as rivals like Google and Amazon explore monetizing AI through cloud-based services. However, by directly integrating AI chat data into its advertising engine, Meta is adopting a unique strategy that is sparking new discussions about privacy and the extent of data use globally.
