NDTV CEO and Editor-in-Chief Rahul Kanwal has condemned the heckling of an NDTV reporter during a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, saying intimidation and abuse of journalists doing their job are unacceptable.

In a social media post, Kanwal said protesters do their own cause a disservice when they target reporters covering demonstrations.

“To attack, heckle or abuse field reporters doing their job is condemnable. Protesters do their cause a disservice by targeting journalists reporting live when tempers are running high,” he wrote.

Kanwal emphasised that the right to demonstrate and the freedom to report on demonstrations are both essential, and that neither should be exercised through intimidation.

“The right to protest and the right to report on it are both essential freedoms — neither should come at the cost of intimidation or abuse,” he said.

The statement also expressed support for NDTV’s reporting teams, with Kanwal praising their composure while working amid hostility.

“Proud of NDTV’s army of reporters, holding firm and telling the story calmly and confidently,” he wrote.

Kanwal’s comments focused on the treatment of journalists on the ground, defending their ability to cover protests while also recognising the right of people to demonstrate. He urged protesters to recognise that targeting those reporting live undermines the cause they seek to advance.
