Dip in Twitter user participation as India completes Phase 4 voting

With four phases of the Lok Sabha elections over, there seems to be a dip in user participation on Twitter, particularly in terms of unique users who tweeted about the elections.

Compared to the first phase on April 11, Monday’s Phase 4 saw over 30,000 fewer users engaging about the polls. In the first phase, Twitter recorded 99,794 unique users talking about the elections. The numbers have shown a decline, with the lowest being recorded in the latest phase — 69,371 users.

With three more phases of the elections left to continue till May 19, the trend has not really picked up. The results are to be declared on May 23 after over a month-and-half of electioneering.

As for the third phase that saw 72 constituencies across 9 states go to polls with 12.82 crore voters, data shared by the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi says the battle of hashtags saw 50,334 original tweets, 69,371 unique users and 87 hashtags.

Talking of hashtags, the top five hashtags for Monday were #LokSabhaElections2019 with 58,996 tweets, #IndiaVotesForNaMo with 53,907 tweets, #Phase4 with 30,184, #VotingRound4 with 21,403 and #MumbaikarVoteKar with 19,372 tweets.

A quick comparison with Phase 3 shows that on April 23 there were 99 hashtags created for with 79,645 unique users on Twitter. The top 5 hashtags on Twitter on Tuesday were #LokSabhaElections2019 with 65,841 mentions, #AayegaToModiHi with 58,346 tweets, #BharatBoleNaMoNaMo with 30,873 mentions followed by #Phase3 at 25,963 mentions and finally #VotingRound3 with 19,921 mentions.

However, the top 5 mentions in Phase 4 saw the return of Indian National Congress in the Twitter battle. Among the top 5 mentions of the day were @BJP4India with 28,314 mentions, @narendramodi with 23,531 mentions, @AmitShah  with 9,938 mentions followed by @poonammahajan with 5,984 mentions, and finally @INCIndia with 5,246 mentions.

The top five tweets for Phase 4 had Salman Khan’s voting tweet at the top of the chart.

 

It got  more than 5,000 retweets followed by a tweet by the official handle of BJP with the hashtag IndiaVotesForNaMo.

 

Then there was  Smriti Irani’s tweet from her official handle.
