India has reportedly topped TikTok’s list of governments who made the most number of legal or content-removal requests. According to the TikTok Transparency Report compiled over a one-year period, the Indian government had reportedly sent out 107 requests to TikTok, demanding user information or content takedown. It has surpassed the United States in the number of legal and emergency requests made by any government in the report.

According to the report, India had presented 99 legal requests and 8 emergency requests, bringing the total number to 107. The US has made 68 legal requests and 11 emergency requests. The app took action on 47 per cent of the accounts reported by the Indian government.

In addition to the legal requests, India also tops the charts of the list of countries that have requested TikTok to remove or restrict content. The government made 11 requests to the video-sharing app, out of which 8 were removed.

The ByteDance-owned video-sharing app revealed that it is often presented with requests from government agencies or law-enforcement officials to take down certain videos or share user information. In its report, TikTok mentioned such it complies with such requests if it is deemed to violate local laws or if it helps in assisting criminal investigations.
