Ola, Uber trigger heated debate on Twitter over promotional campaigns, turn hostile
Both brands have been stepping on each others’ toes in terms of promotional offers. After being accused of imitating Uber’s earlier campaign, Twitter debate between Ola and Uber got ugly
Taking on rival Ola, and marking its largest international geographical expansion in its history, taxi-sharing app Uber is set to launch operations in 7 new cities in India. Both brands have been at loggerheads ever since their inception in India. However, in light of recent events, they seem to have taken their rivalry too seriously, and have been trying to be one step ahead of each other in order to tap the competitive cab-service market.
Just over 10 days ago, during the launch of the integrated app, Ola took to the rising fetish over Twitter trolls, and went on to start a friendly exchange of tweets with TaxiForSure. Uber saw its chance and butted in the friendly conversation between the two brands from the same company.
This was the last tweet exchanged between the two brands.
Both the brands have been stepping on each others’ toes since then in terms of promotional offers. Ola and Uber both announced new offers over the past weekend. The one has promised free drinks in a few Chennai pubs and the other a chance to watch the latest Terminator movie. All one has to do is hail their cabs. Most opening the Ola mobile app for a cab on Friday found a psychedelic pop-up on their screen - "OLA NIGHTS! Free Drinks at your favourite bars.
#IPledgeToNeverDrinkAndDrive #PartyWithOlacabs" tweeted the cab company.
A user’s tweet about Ola’s offer triggered another Twitter bashing session. Excerpts:
To this, Uber replied:
Ola didn’t take the sarcasm too well and responded::
It didn’t take much to bring out the hostility between the two rivals. They finally gave up, each with a tone of much contempt.
This was enough dough for Twitterati to begin judgments and arguments. Here are a few excerpts:
