I have to say Piyush Pandey and I weren’t really close friends. Yes, we knew each other well and have spoken multiple times on the phone. But I won't call him a close friend by any means. And yet, when the ban was imposed on me and I was depressed and distraught with all the abuse going around, Piyush had called me. In his booming voice, he said: “Boria you are retired hurt. But you aren’t out. When you resume your innings again, get to a 100 and make it count.”

I vividly remember the words. He said it twice and they have stayed with me. I would have added the story in my book ‘Banned’ but did not because I hadn’t asked him if he was okay with me doing so. But today, I have to state it while I remember him fondly.

The world will remember him for all his excellent creative work. Adverts like the one for Fevicol, Cadburys, Asian Paints etc. will forever stand the test of time. For me personally, I will remember him for that phone call. He need not have called me. As I said, we weren’t great friends. And yet, he did and said what I have written above.

We did work together for a few things and each time I enjoyed the conversations with him. His ideas would stimulate you and I remember planning a Paralympics campaign with him ahead of the Tokyo Paralympic Games. When I mentioned to him that I was expecting India to win 15-plus medals he was hugely excited. “It merits something special” was what he had told me.

Piyush was a special man and will forever remain special for that one phone call he had made. Rest in peace, genius. India needs more people like you.
