India is the fifth largest market for WPP in terms of revenue, said WPP CEO Mark Read at an event in Mumbai on Tuesday where he spoke about the company’s latest developments and strategy. This is Read's first press conference ever in India.

He started off by saying that WPP wants to put creativity at the heart of its business.

Reflecting on India’s positioning in the global market, Read said: “We know India has been a tech leader and has an important role. We have seen strong growth in the world and India has been a standout market.”

On the way ahead for WPP in terms of creative work, he said: “Creativity is our secret sauce. WPP is as much a tech company as it is a creative company. We are focused on making the company more client-centric.”

According to Read, WPP was focused on getting strong brands. “We want to have a strong WPP and strong brands.”

He also spoke about having integrated country operations and a global campus strategy.

“Purpose is critical to WPP,” said Read. “WPP culture is open, optimistic and extraordinary in terms of the people we have. WPP has an open and collaborative culture.”

Read further elaborated on the importance of purpose for WPP. “When you work with us you know about purpose more than other places.”

The WPP CEO also highlighted how the company is focused on the need to curb the use of plastic. “By the end of 2020, WPP will be a no-plastic company,” he said. “Our people are very passionate about these topics.”
