  • Elon Musk has reportedly invested approximately $1 billion in Skydance, according to CNBC, although this has not been independently confirmed by either party.
  • The investment follows Skydance's recent merger with Warner Bros Discovery, which created a major media entity under the Skydance name, combining assets like Paramount Pictures and HBO.
  • Musk's investment is part of Skydance's efforts to raise equity capital and highlights his ongoing relationship with Larry Ellison, whose son David Ellison leads Skydance.
  • Speculation exists that Musk's companies, including SpaceX, may engage in further financial collaborations with Skydance, potentially impacting content distribution and technology platforms, though no formal agreements have been established.

Elon Musk has invested roughly $1 billion in Skydance, CNBC reported on Thursday, citing a person familiar with the matter, potentially deepening ties between the billionaire entrepreneur and the Ellison family’s newly expanded media empire.

Representatives for both Skydance and Musk did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment, meaning the investment has not yet been independently confirmed by either side.

The reported deal comes just weeks after Paramount Skydance completed its $110 billion takeover of Warner Bros Discovery, with the combined company adopting the Skydance name. The merger brought together assets including Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros, HBO, CNN, CBS and their respective streaming businesses.

According to Reuters, Musk’s commitment is part of a broader effort by Skydance to raise equity investment, with Semafor having first reported the news.

The investment would also underscore the longstanding relationship between Musk and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, whose son David Ellison leads Skydance. In 2022, Larry Ellison committed $1 billion toward Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, now X.

The report follows comments earlier this week from veteran media investor John Malone, who speculated that SpaceX could eventually invest as much as $8 billion to $10 billion in Skydance and potentially strike a broader content arrangement. That larger scenario remains unconfirmed.

Skydance is positioning itself as a more technology-driven media company following the Warner Bros Discovery deal, while also pursuing cost reductions and fresh equity capital.

For the media industry, Musk’s reported investment is significant less for its size than for what it could signal. A closer financial relationship between Musk and Skydance could eventually create opportunities spanning content distribution, technology and platforms such as X - although there is currently no confirmed agreement extending beyond the reported equity investment.
