The Delhi High Court has granted Rs 5 lakh in compensation to TV Today Network over defamatory remarks made by a social media user against its journalist Rajdeep Sardesai after he interviewed actress Rhea Chakraborty following the controversies surrounding the death of her then live-in partner actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

The order in this regard was passed by Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav on September 3, 2025. The defamation case was filed by TV Today Network Ltd in 2020 over certain defamatory remarks made by social media user named Anurag Srivastava.

The court reportedly ruled that the comments made by the defendant were highly defamatory. “Having considered the overall facts and circumstances, the Court finds that the objectionable tweets were highly defamatory and remain unsubstantiated by the defendant, despite having been afforded sufficient opportunity to do so,” the court said in its judgment.

Such an irresponsible act of the defendant has to be deprecated, the court ruled.

“Having considered the overall facts and circumstances, the Court finds that the objectionable tweets were highly defamatory and remain unsubstantiated by the defendant, despite having been afforded sufficient opportunity to do so,” the High Court said in its judgment.

Rajdeep Sardesai came under heavy criticism after his interaction with Rhea Chakraborty, where she stated that Sushant Singh Rajput had been struggling with psychological issues and implied that his fragile mental state could have contributed to his untimely demise.
