Editors Guild expresses concern over death of journalists
The Guild has sought strict punishment for those responsible for the deaths
The Editors Guild of India has expressed distress and concern over the recent death of two journalists under suspicious circumstances. The deaths took place in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
In Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh, TV channel reporter Sandip Sharma was mowed down by a truck. Sharma had exposed an alleged nexus between sand mafia and some policemen and his death is said to be linked to those he had reported against.
In Bihar’s Garhani, Dainik Bhaskar reporter Navin Nishchal and his friend Vijay Singh were killed when their motorcycle was rammed allegedly by a person whom Nishchal had written against.
The Guild is concerned that journalists who expose wrongdoings and criminal connections of the mafia with government are being targeted. The Guild demands that the Bihar and Madhya Pradesh governments ensure speedy justice in both the cases and punish the culprits.
Also, in Delhi, a young press photographer was beaten and molested in public by a senior police officer. These incidents confirm an increase in attack on journalists, the Guild said.
