3 news photographers assaulted by PAC personnel while covering VHP protest in Varanasi

Sanjay Gupta, Photographer of TOI’s Varanasi edition was seriously wounded yesterday afternoon (Monday) while covering the VHP protest march against a police lathi charge. He suffered injuries to his head when some Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel targeted him, following an outbreak of violence in Godowlia area on Monday afternoon.
Media reports suggest that two other photographers also got injured while trying to help Sanjay Gupta. Both cameras of Gupta were damaged by the security men during the confrontation. Gupta was admitted to SPG Divisional Hospital for treatment.
The media report highlights that after the police dispersed, the protesters at Godowlia attacked policemen in small groups, and one such group hurled bricks at PAC personnel from Rampura Road.
Gupta went ahead to this point to cover the scene and was attacked by the PAC personnel. It led to larger altercation when a large number of photographers reached the spot to protest. SSP, Akash Kulhari managed the situation.
