N Ravi elected President of Editors’ Guild of India
The former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu succeeds TN Ninan, Chairman & Editorial Director of Business Standard
Narasimhan Ravi, Director of Kasturi Sons and former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, has been elected as President of Editors’ Guild of India at its annual general body meeting held on April 24, 2013.
Ravi succeeds TN Ninan, Chairman and Editorial Director of Business Standard. He will be serving a two-year term as President of Editors’ Guild of India.
N Ravi is a veteran journalist and has been associated with The Hindu for more than 30 years. He was Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper for 12 years from 1991 to 2003.
When asked how Editors’ Guild will take up the issue of consultation paper on cross media ownership with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Ravi replied, “From my preliminary reading of the consultation paper, it appears that TRAI is grossly overreaching. In the first place, in the guise of regulating the use of the frequency spectrum, it seeks to control content, which is totally unwarranted, besides violating the guarantee of freedom of speech and expression under Article 19. Secondly, the issues as framed seem to indicate an intent to intrude into the area of media ownership, in particular newspaper ownership, which is wholly outside the remit of TRAI.”
The rest of the Editors’ Guild executive body remains unchanged.
