Wearing mask during COVID is not political, it’s considerate: Prasun Sikdar, ManipalCigna
Guest Column: Prasun Sikdar, ManipalCigna Health Insurance Company Limited, writes about the company's 'MASK ZAROORI HAI' campaign aimed at minimising the spread of COVID-19
We are all living in unprecedented times and I have no need to tell you this because we see that word over and over again as Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to affect growing numbers of people around the world. The number of COVID-19 infections is also going up daily in India and as the country begins to emerge from lockdown it is imperative that we all follow social distancing norms and wear face masks in public places to protect our nation’s health and well-being.
According to health experts, wearing a mask can help prevent the invisible transmission and help save lives, especially of those that may be more vulnerable to COVID-19.So, to save millions of lives we don’t need to be a doctor, a nurse, or even health care professional, all we need to do is ‘Wear a Mask’ to protect ourselves and others as best we can.
When I come in contact with someone not wearing a mask, it baffles me that people can’t follow two simple rules to protect themselves and everyone around them.I have also heard people saying “nothing will happen to me,” or “this small cloth cannot protect me”, or ‘I am healthy enough”.However, research shows that in many cases, it is possible to have COVID-19 without showing symptoms. So, considering the massive size of our population,it is always in our best interest to wear a face mask even if we think we are healthy. It is also important to bear in mind that since this virus is so contagious, a mask can help contain small droplets that come out of the mouth and/or nose while talking, sneezing or coughing. Well, if one has COVID-19 and is not showing symptoms, a face mask reduces the chance of spreading the contagion to others. If one is healthy, a face mask may protect them from larger droplets from the people around.
We at ManipalCigna Health Insurance our committed to our mission to improve the health, well-being and peace of mind of those we serve. Thus to deliver on our mission and to play our part in the global effort to help contain the spread of the COVID-19, I am honoured to announce the launch of our new awareness campaign “MASK ZAROORI HAI”. The new campaign is aimed to encourage our employees, customers, partners and those we’re privileged to serve to wear a face mask when in public to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
It hurts me so badly to see the amount of rise in new COVID-19 cases in India now that places are slowing opening up across the country. Thus to help reduce the risk of getting infected, through our ‘MASK ZAROORI HAI’campaign we want to highlight the impact of various scenarios and the reasons why wearing a mask is a must in these unprecedented times. The campaign will also urge people not to yield to fear, instead be disciplined in wearing a protective face mask as a precaution against the virus. I personally believe that wearing a mask is caring, and it should not be an imposed attitude rather a contributing attribute towards society. Wearing a mask does not make us weak, scared, stupid, or even controlled. But, instead, I feel that everyone who wears a mask is a ‘Hero’. It just reiterates the fact that wearing a mask is not political, it’s considerate, it’s polite, and it’s our best defence to keep ourselves and those around us safe.
As Arianna Huffington, founder of The Huffington Post put is so well, “The impact of the humble mask on containing COVID-19 is so great that if it were a medical or technological innovation it would have won the Noble Prize by now.” It so wise of her to say so because today none of us precisely yet know when will a vaccine will be available. Until we do, I feel it’s important to wear a mask in public because masks are easier to breathe through than ventilators. Thus, at moments like this, I totally believe ‘Mask Hai Toh Health Hai’. Soit is my humble request to every single one of you as well to wear a mask when you go out for essential needs. I also humbly invite you all to take a masked selfie with ManipalCigna’sInstagram AR filter and post it with the #Mask ZarooriHaion your social media platforms and remember to encourage your family, friends, your neighbours, colleagues and community members to take masked selfies, too with our AR filter. As Covid Warriors let's all do our part together to spread the awareness about the importance of wearing a mask to make our country and the world a safer place.
#Mask Zaroori Hai #Kyunki #Mask Hai Toh Health Hai’.
Stay Safe, Stay Healthy!
