When ixigo made its stock market debut in June 2024, it was not just a financial milestone, it was the culmination of 17 years of deliberate, grounded leadership by Aloke Bajpai.
An IIT Kanpur alumnus and INSEAD graduate, Bajpai, passionate about technology, has anchored his journey on deep empathy for India’s ‘aspiring middle class’ turning ixigo into a tech-first OTA with over 540 million annual active users by FY25.
As he celebrated his birthday on 21 July, there could be no better time to look back at the journey of a founder who defied the odds, built for the underserved and turned ixigo into India’s go-to travel platform for millions across India.
His career timeline reflects a different kind of disruption, one rooted in patience, practicality and people-first product design.
His early career unfolded in the US, where he worked at Amadeus, a global travel tech firm. While designing backend systems, he notices how travel platforms abroad were seamless. India’s booking journey felt cumbersome by contrast. That realisation, coupled with the cultural resonance, triggered his return to India in 2007 to start ixigo with Rajnish Kumar.
The Big Picture
Ixigo’s beginnings were not marked by splashy funding rounds or viral campaigns. It started with Bajpai’s quiet conviction that India’s travel chaos could be untangled with the right technology and a lot of patience.
The platform began as a flights-and-hotels meta search engine, but the ambition ran deeper. For nearly five years, Bajpai turned down external capital, choosing to grow by solving real user problems such as predicting PNR confirmations, tracking train schedules, setting smart fare alerts and all of this was long before these features became industry standards.
Marketing budgets were non-existent. So was personal comfort. During tough phases, he and his co-founder gave up their own salaries so their team could stay afloat. Colleagues took pay cuts, not because they were asked to, but because the belief was shared. That phase did not shape the product, it shaped the culture. One rooted in empathy, frugality and trust.
Building For Bharat
He deliberately pursued underserved segments. He prioritised train and bus travellers in Tier II and III towns. Urban air travel got hype, but ixigo leaned into the real growth opportunity, rail users with minimal literacy or connectivity issues. That focus shaped features like offline booking, voice-based search in local language, travel assurance products and more.
He refused to compromise user trust for flashier margins. That decision made ixigo stand out. It was not chasing metro air travellers. It was serving millions of cautious, first-time bookers and that is where the real disruption was.
When Covid-19 brought the travel industry to a standstill, most companies pulled back. Ixigo did the opposite, it doubled down and pushed forward. In 2021, he expanded talent, acquired Abhibus and Comfirmtkt, rolled out full refunds via ixigo Assured and doubled down on customer support during uncertainty.
Long before AI became buzz, he saw its potential. Starting in 2012-12, ixigo built ML models for fare prediction and waitlist forecasting. By 2017, ixigo launched ‘TARA’, a chatbot handling close to 90 per cent of support queries. Since then, features such as ixigo PLAN, dynamic trip pricing, multilingual voice interaction and even HR automation have been embedded across operations.
The Underrated Impact
He is a tech founder who did not chase hype or investors' headlines. He preferred execution and product obsessiveness over rapid scaling. He embedded AI way earlier rather than chasing buzz cycles.
His personal choices hint at humility over display. He rarely engages in flamboyant investor storytelling. He treats funding as fuel, not a milestone. He speaks in measured terms. If you focus on execution, investor faith will follow. If products fail to improve, metrics will punish you, not publicity.
His love for India’s journey, triggered by Swades and amplified by emotion, continues to guide decision-making.
Even in the public market spotlight, his tone has not changed. There is no celebratory rhetoric or unicorn chest-thumping. Just a clear focus on making travel better. For him, real growth is when users keep coming back, without being pushed.
Unlike most startup founders, he does not chase buzzwords. He rarely speaks in sweeping predictions. He prefers execution over evangelism. “We did not want to be just another OTA,” he once said. “We wanted to solve for everyday Indians.”
Growth In Numbers
As of FY26, its suite of platforms has surpassed 700 million cumulative app downloads and serves over 84 million monthly active users. In FY23, ixigo posted a revenue of Rs 501 crore and a net profit of Rs 23 crore. Ixigo made its public debut in June 2024, with its Rs 740 crore IPO oversubscribed 98.3 times and its stock listing at nearly 49 per cent premium.
It was valued at approximately Rs 2,800 crore (around USD 335 million) at the time of listing. Today, with over 5 million daily active users, ixigo is not only moving people across India, it is redefining what it means to build enduring tech for the real economy.
The parent company, Le Travenues Technology has started FY26 on a strong note, reporting its highest-ever quarterly revenue and profit. The company recorded a revenue from operations of Rs 314.5 crore in Q1 FY26, marking a 73 per cent increase over the same quarter last year. Profit before tax, share of loss of associate and exceptional items stood at Rs 28.7 crore, up 76 per cent year-on-year, reflecting continued scalability and operational efficiency.
Marking The Moment
Aloke Bajpai is a study in deliberate disruption. His journey challenges the popular playbooks of rapid scaling, relentless funding and glamour. He built a travel tech brand that talks softly but solves loudly.
On his birthday, we celebrate not just a tech leader but a grounded visionary whose style is unconventional, slow and steady over shortcuts. He did not chase trends, he stayed true to solving for the real India.
Wishing him a year filled with new travel and new victories.
