IRS 2011 Q2: Growth restored for dailies in Uttarakhand
Adding almost 2.2 lakh average issue readership (AIR), top six dailies have seen growth restored in the Uttarakhand market as per the IRS 2011 Q2 results. Meanwhile, four out of the top five periodicals have added more than 1.5 lakh AIR.
Adding almost 2.2 lakh average issue readership (AIR), top six dailies have seen growth restored in the Uttarakhand market as per the IRS 2011 Q2 results. Magazines have also been able to attract more readers as compared to the previous quarter with four out of the top five periodicals have witnessed growth in AIR.
Amar Ujala has maintained its leadership in the state with an AIR of 8.88 lakh, adding 57,000 readers in a year with a year-on-year growth of 7 per cent. With a growth of 2 per cent in AIR over last year and 7 per cent over the previous quarter, the current AIR of Dainik Jagran stands at 6.19 lakh. Adding 1.20 lakh readers in a year, the highest growth among all dailies, Hindustan reported an AIR of 3.13 lakh.
Meanwhile, the popularity of English dailies in Uttarakahnd is on the rise as AIR of dailies, including The Times of India (TOI) and Hindustan Times (HT), has gone up over last year. TOI has reported an AIR of 85,000 in 2011 Q2, a growth of 5 per cent over last year. Meanwhile, Hindi daily Rashtriya Sahara and HT share equal ranking, with both reporting an AIR of 51,000.
Compact dailies Inext of Jagran Group and Amar Ujala Compact have both reported decline in readership. The decline story has continued for Punjab Kesari as well, with the daily registering an AIR of 10,000 in this quarter, a decline of 58 per cent over last year. Meanwhile, with an AIR of 7,000, business newspaper The Economic Times has been able to make it to the list of top ten dailies in Uttarakhand.
It was a good year for magazines in Uttarakhand, with most of them seeing their AIR moving northwards. With growing readership, Grehlakshmi (AIR of 54,000 in 2011 Q2) and Pratiyogita Darpan (AIR of 50,000 in 2011 Q2) are the most read magazines in the state. With an AIR of 48,000, Meri Saheli has experienced a decline in readership in the state. Jagran Josh, Cricket Samrat and Grih Shobha (Hindi) have also been able to add more readers in a year to their kitty.
