Saregama, Sony DADC in exclusive worldwide licensing pact

Home Entertainment Services by Sony DADC, a leading home entertainment content provider in India and Saregama India have announced a licensing agreement between the two companies. Under this association, Sony DADC will take on the exclusive worldwide exploitation of the entire Saregama audio/ video content library, including its sales, marketing and distribution across all physical formats.

Contrary to popular beliefs, Sony DADC’s alliance with Saregama brings into focus the expected growth in the physical content market in India. This alliance brings together under one roof iconic Indian content from Saregama and current chartbusters from Sony Music alongside the best of international music for Indian music lovers. Saregama has invested significantly in digital technology to deliver music through various digital channels (including CRBT, WAP, WEB and devices).  It will continue to expand its digital footprint and also focus on A&R, its core competency.

Commenting on the association, Rajat Kakar, Business Head of Home Entertainment Services by Sony DADC said, “The acquisition of the Saregama license is a big leap forward in terms of our presence in the physical market for both audio and video content, as well as the beginning of a key strategic partnership. With this alliance, we get a foothold into every nook and corner of the country and will bring to the consumer the finest of Indian and international content both in audio and video.”

Surya Mantha, MD, Saregama India added here, “We believe physical business is here to stay and accordingly attach a lot of strategic importance to ensure a prominent presence. With the fast evolving ecosystem in the physical business, Sony DADC is emerging as a powerhouse and it made perfect sense for us to strategically align ourselves with them.”

Within six months from its inception in October 2012, Sony DADC has already bagged the home video license for major Hollywood studios such as Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Warner Home Video, and National Geographic in India. Sony DADC also has the license for Sony Music content in India.
