Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down the standalone discovery+ app and website in India, bringing an end to the streaming platform’s direct-to-consumer operations in the market.
From September 3, users in India can no longer purchase new discovery+ subscriptions through Warner Bros. Discovery or third-party providers. The app will be discontinued on November 3, 2026.
The company has outlined different arrangements for existing subscribers based on their billing cycles. For monthly subscribers, auto-renewals will stop from October 3, while access will continue until the end of the ongoing billing period.
Annual subscribers whose billing period ends between October 3 and November 3 will retain access until their existing plans expire, but their subscriptions will not be renewed. Those with annual plans extending beyond November 3 will receive a pro-rated refund for the unused portion of their subscription following the app's closure.
Discovery+ content will continue to be available in India through partner platforms, including Amazon Prime Video Channels, Jio TV+, Jio TV, Tata Play Binge, Dish TV VZY and Playbox TV.
The move shifts discovery+ content from a standalone streaming model towards distribution through partner platforms. Warner Bros. Discovery has not specified how individual shows and films will be packaged or positioned across these services.
The shutdown comes amid a broader shift in the streaming industry, with media companies reassessing standalone platforms and exploring distribution through larger platforms and aggregation services.
