The 3rd National Conference on Digital Commerce highlighted key issues, challenges and opportunities for the growth of e-commerce in India.

The 3rd National Conference on Digital Commerce, held in Mumbai on January 25, 2011, highlighted the key issues, challenges and opportunities for the growth of e-commerce in India. The event was organised by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), in association with eBay.
The conference brought together experts who attempted to highlight ground realities and figure out the Indian industry’s attitudes and perceptions vis-à-vis digital commerce. The conference reflected upon various aspects of digital commerce and scrutinised the numerous opportunities and challenges posed before the industry at large. The conference also shed light on the upcoming areas like mobile commerce and examined ways to boost it to a level that proves profitable scheme.
One of the issues that came up for discussion was how people were still reluctant to make payments online fearing fraud and scepticism over secure payment gateways.
Murali Manohar, Head – eCommerce, India and South Asia, Visa, noted that mobile payments were still not in play in India due to the high chances of fraud. “The country needs better guidelines to make people get into the habit of mobile payments,” he stressed.
The panel discussion on ‘Should brands have an e-commerce storefront?’ featured LK Gupta, CMO, LG Electronics; Jay Gupta, Founder & Managing Director, The Loot; Kartik Jain, Head - Marketing and Direct, ICICI Lombard ; Belson Coutinho, Senior General Manager - ecommerce and Innovations, Jet Airways; and Pawan Gadia, CEO, Ferns ‘N’ Petals as panelists.
The second panel discussion was on ‘Digital Commerce has come of age’. The panelists for this session included Dinesh Agarwal, CEO, IndiaMart.com; Rajesh Sawhney, President, Reliance Big Entertainment; Rajesh Nahar, Co-founder & President, Cbazaar.com; Amarinder Dhaliwal, VP & Business Head - Auto & eCommerce, Times Internet; and Anup Seth, Senior Vice President, Future Bazaar.
This was followed by a special session with Rajesh Agarwal, Secretary, Agriculture, Dairy, Development, Fisheries and Animal Husbandary, Government of Maharashtra, who spoke on eCommerce for rural India.
The next panel discussion revolved around ‘Digital Payments: The new way to pay’. The panelist comprised Murali Manohar, Head - eCommerce-India and South Asia, Visa; Subhash Jewria, CEO & Managing Director, Oss Retails; Satyen Kothari, Head - Strategy & New Product, First Data; Rohit Bansal, Co-Founder and COO, Snapdeal.com; and Vivek Nayak , COO, Avenues India.
Amit Purohit, DGM - mCommerce, Tata Teleservices; Naushad Contractor, Head - Marketing – Mobile Commerce, Vodafone; Saurabh Jain, Founder, ngpay; and Probir Roy, Founder, Paymate discussed at length on the topic ‘Mobile Commerce: The new shopping cart’.
