SonyLIV records higher growth rate in non-metros than metros in 2018: Report

The OTT platform, which completes six years, has unveiled a ‘State of Digital Entertainment 2018’ report

Video on demand platform SonyLIV has completed six years. Marking the occasion, the platform has unveiled a ‘State of Digital Entertainment 2018’ report.

According to the report, the OTT platform saw a higher growth rate in digital consumption in non-metros as compared to the metros. 

The platform has seen three times growth in metros, while the growth in non-metros is four times. Cities such as Lucknow, Indore, Patna and Jaipur have surfaced as major growth centers, the report states.

The report further states that SonyLIV has witnessed a rise of seven times in total time spent on the platform. The OTT player grew by three times in terms of MAUs (monthly active users) in 2018 compared to the previous year.

Talking about the sports viewership, the report states that FIFA World Cup, India’s cricket tour of Australia and India’s cricket tour of England were the top three sports events of the year with 70 million, 50 million and 30 million viewers, respectively. Further, KBC Play Along was India’s most interactive show of 2018; recorded 8.2 MN registrations and garnered a reach of 596 million interactions.

The report also shares detailed insights on digital video consumption, user patterns and audience demographics of India.

Quoting FICCI figures, the report states that Internet users in India are estimated to reach 829 million by 2021. By 2020, India is expected to become the second largest video-viewing audience globally.  The report further uses TRAI & BCG Group figures to state that Internet users in India are estimated to be more than the combined population of G7 countries.
