A study on smartphones conducted by e-commerce company eBay reveals that 70 per cent smartphone users access online shopping websites through their phones. Mobile shopping is the third-most popular category of search among smartphone users after email and social networking sites.
The report also states that over 87 per cent of Indian smartphone users compare product prices online. This usage behavior, as per the report, is more popular than travel tickets, movie timings or contact details.
As per recent industry reports, travel constitutes the largest chunk of the $6 billion e-commerce business in India. Muralikrishnan B, Country Manager, eBay India explains, “Mobile commerce is starting to gain traction in India with the burgeoning smartphone penetration. A large number of Indians now use their smartphones to shop as well as compare prices.”
Interestingly, gadgets are the most popular category among the online buyers. The findings of the report also suggest that 68 per cent of users have made an online purchase using their smartphones. An online survey of 4,500 samples conducted by eBay also reveals that Samsung and Nokia are the preferred customer choice for smartphones (With market share of 40 per cent each) followed by iPhone which accounts for 17 per cent of the total market.
As per recent data released by CyberMedia Research, the smartphone market grew at a rate of 87 per cent as against the feature phone market, which registered seven per cent year-on-year growth in 2011.
India continues to remain a growing smartphone market with close to 20 million users. The Google-IPSOS Study, 2012 reveals that Indian smartphone users are highly active on internet usage through smartphone devices, as against users in the most evolved smartphone market of the US.
Indians are outscoring Americans in going online from their smartphones. Indian users are also more active on social media than ever before. The report states that 76 per cent smartphone users in India access social networking sites through their phones as compared to 54 per cent in the US.
