Indian wing of the Korean conglomerate LG Group is cashing in on a big surge in demand for its CDMA handsets, shipping five million handsets to Reliance Infocomm. Senior Officials feel, there would be higher demand for CDMA handsets if more potential customers adapt the technology.

"We are happy to announce the shipment of five million mobile handsets to Reliance India Mobile. It is extremely encouraging to know that LG CDMA has become the most preferred choice for CDMA mobile users in India," said Mun Hwa Park, President & CEO, LG Electronics, Telecommunication Equipment & Handset Company.

According to Gartner 2003, LG Electronics enjoys the status of most preferred CDMA mobile handset manufacturer in India. It is also the No. 1 player in FWTs & FWPs. Internationally LG leads the market of CDMA handsets with a 23 per cent share.

Presently, Reliance offers four varieties of CDMA mobiles from the LG stable -the largest range among all the CDMA handset vendors in the country. These handsets are based on 'CDMA 2000 1x' technology that allows the user to access high speed mobile-internet - up to 144kbps and intensive data services like video downloads using the 'R World' facility.

Reliance Infocomm is targeting around 25-30per cent growth of the industry with 2-2.5 million new subscribers coming up every month in the current year. The telecommunication wing of the industrial leviathan, Reliance, has projected a subscriber-base of around 3.5-4 lakh for its recently launched pre-paid connections. The group has already roped in over 6.3 million with its post-paid connections.
