Donald Trump Is No. 1 Political Advertiser on Facebook: NYU Study
A study from the New York University has found that the Trump team has spent $274,100 on Facebook since May 2018
US President Donald Trump is the biggest buyer of political ads on Facebook, according to a study by the New York University.
The study found that the Trump team has spent $274,100 on Facebook since May alone. The Trump Make America Great Again Committee spent £190,400 on 4,127 ads while the Donald J Trump for President spent $83,700 on 5,396 ads. All of Trump’s ads from May through July have had cumulative 37 million impressions.
The research team studied the political ads that ran on Facebook between May 2018 and July 2018 using Facebook’s recently launched searchable archive of ads with political content.
American healthcare non-profit Planned Parenthood, which ran 3,389 ads, was the second biggest spender giving over $188,000 to Facebook. The National Rifle Association was the third largest spender paying $58,000 for 213 ads.
The only other political candidate to feature in the top 10 list is Beto O’ Rourke, a Democrat running for a Senate seat in Texas.
In May Facebook launched a public, searchable political ads archive. It contains all ads with the “Political Ad” label as well as additional information like the amount spent and demographic audience information for each ad.
Facebook, which came under intense fire for overlooking Russian interference in influencing the 2016 US Presidential Elections introduced a number of measures to prevent further abuse of the platform in elections. “By increasing transparency around ads and Pages on Facebook, we can increase accountability for advertisers — improving our service for everyone,” said Rob Goldman, VP, Ads and Alex Himel, VP, Local & Pages, introducing the feature.
