Dating apps saw a 398% jump in Daily Active Users in India in Q2: Report

As per the Global Mobile Consumer Trends Report 2020, India also leads the global average in gaming and fitness apps downloads

India has seen an unprecedented 398% jump in daily active users on dating apps, according to the Global Mobile Consumer Trends Report 2020, thus translating to an additional 1 million active users.

India also saw a 413% jump in downloads by new users. This report by MoEngage and Apptopia which tracks movements in Q2 vs Q1, 2020, observes that global rise in download of social media apps in Q2 vs Q1 was 9.72% and India was the only region where downloads in Q2 reduced as compared to Q1. But the number of Daily Active Users (DAU) stayed positive at +2%.

The report identifies data patterns of 1.5 billion mobile app users spread across 5 different geographical regions. Data in the report reflects consumer confidence trends in different industries in Q2 (April, May, June), 2020.

For the overall Media & Entertainment space, India saw an increase of 11.52% and DAU at 7.99%. However, for the Entertainment and Video Streaming space specifically, India was the only region to see a slight decrease in both new and active users. It saw an increase in the frequency of use of OTT video. With regards to Music and Audio Streaming (OTT audio) category, India Southeast Asia, and Oceania have seen an increase in the number of new users but a slight decrease in daily active users.

“Gaming apps have seen the largest growth in India. The number of new users, active users and frequency of usage increased much more than the global average,” says the report. With regards to sports apps, while the number of new users has consistently increased across all regions, the number of active users has decreased globally. India has seen the highest decline in the number of active users (-13.74%), more than 3X the global average. Although India was the only regional that saw an increase in the average session duration by 1.67%.

India has also led the global downloads of fitness apps in Q2 by 156.73%, which translated to 58 million active users. Even in terms of DAU, India saw a whopping 84% growth that translated to 12 million users.

In terms of e-commerce apps, India was the only region to see a decrease in both downloads (-1.42%) and DAU (-13.88%). On the other hand, grocery apps have seen the highest increase in daily active users in India.

It was no surprise that globally, edtech apps saw an increase in DAU by 22.39%, downloads by 34.14%, frequency of usage by 31.18% and the average session duration by 2.73%. India came a respectable second with 31.35% increase in new users in Q2 over Q1.

With regards to mobility apps, India was the only region to witness an upward trend in downloads by 4.76% while The Americas and India led the growth in downloads for the Travel and Hospitality industry posting strong increases of 15.64% and 15.52% respectively. In Banking and Fintech, India was the only geography that saw a fall in downloads by 4.52%.
