Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games may not happen if it gets postponed any further than 2021, said International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach. In March, the IOC announced that the 2020 Olympics, which was supposed to commence in July, will be postponed to 2021 due to rising coronavirus cases.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had earlier stated that the games cannot be held in 2021 if the virulence is not contained. Bach supported Abe’s stance, saying he understands Japan’s position.

He said that they cannot change the entire sports schedule worldwide for all major federations or keep athletes in the dark about the games. Bach also added that reorganising Olympics is a mammoth task, considering the games were cancelled only during the world wars.
