India’s number of entries for Spikes Asia had dipped in comparison to last year, but the number of metals won has increased multiple-fold. Last year, India had won only 11 metals at the event, whereas this year, the count is as high as 39, including two Grand Prix awards for JWT India for the Teach India campaign. As is known, The Times of India is also the Advertiser of the Year at the event.

Mail Today has joined hands with Meow FM to orgainise the Mail Today Whack It League. Touted as a one-of-its-kind corporate Badminton and Table Tennis Championship, the event will be held on September 19 at the Juhu Ville Parle Development Gymkhana in Mumbai. The Championship will see the best badminton and table tennis players of the Mumbai corporate fraternity battling it out to reign supreme and win this year’s title.

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has signed a Grant of Permission Agreement with PGP Educational & Welfare Society for establishing, maintaining and operating a community radio station (CRS) at Namakkal district in Tamil Nadu. A Letter of Intent had been issued to the organisation after recommendations of an Inter Ministerial Committee and seeking requisite clearances from various Ministries. The community radio station is expected to be operational within three months as per the agreement. With this, the number of CRSes will increase to 53 in the country.

CNN has launched a commercial self-service online storefront of its wire stories, enabling journalists, publishers and media organisations worldwide to license CNN story content through a web-based service at www.cnnwirestore.com. The CNN Wire Store is available globally to license and download individual CNN Wire stories for $199 per story for a single use, utilising a simple credit card transaction. The site allows publishers to browse through CNN Wire articles, hold selected articles in a cart for review, check out easily, and download story content on demand.

The shortlists for the categories of Integrated, TV Craft and Print Craft were announced on the last day of Spikes Asia 2009. Indian agencies have four entries shortlisted in the Integrated category, four in TV Craft category, and one in the Print Craft category. The winners would be announced on the evening on September 18, 2009.

The 11th Concerned Communicator Award, instituted by Patrika Group, was held In Mumbai on September 16. The theme this year was ‘Raise a voice, start a revolution…’ There were more than 3000 entries received this year, out of which 50 were categorised as ‘Best 50 of 11th Concerned Communicator Award’.

Unlike the Cannes debate, where the panel completely agreed on the points made, the Spikes debate at least gave the audience what they were told it would – a debate. The only point here was that the debate had nothing to do with the topic ‘Is Asian Creativity up to the Task’. The panel in fact questioned the subject itself.

The second day of Spikes Asia 2009 begun on an energetic note. Delegates were trickling in and TBWA\’s Worldwide Creative Director John Hunt’s session opened to a near full house. Hunt’s session revolved around one thought and one thought alone – the new age communication breaks away from media schedules and is only about the idea.

The Wildfire team – Leo Burnett’s Mark Tutssel & Contagious’ Paul Kemp-Robertson were at Spikes, too, though with the same advice that they had on wildfire stories at the Cannes Lion International Advertising Festival in June 2009. The team took turns to take the audience through seven points that they believed made for story-telling.

The most applauded, best attended and high energy session of the day was BBC Hard Talk with Neil French, and needless to say, the credit for the “sex” in the session can go only to the godfather of advertising himself. BBC World News’ Mishal Hussain may have expected French to be tough, but the interaction kept the audience spellbound.
